Language use in Scotland is characterised by a range of languages and language varieties. Understanding Grammar in Scotland Today aims to:
  • introduce readers to language investigation using the Scottish Corpus of Texts and Speech (SCOTS), a free online web resource compiled by the University of Glasgow – www.scottishcorpus.ac.uk
  • encourage confidence in the analysis of written and spoken language in contemporary Scotland
  • provide a simple framework for understanding the relationship between grammar and meaning

Understanding Grammar in Scotland Today explains basic concepts and presents a method of analysis that is systematic and suitable for complete beginners with no previous experience of formal grammatical study.

John Corbett is Professor of Applied Language Studies at the University of Glasgow. He is author of various books and articles, including Language and Scottish Literature, and he co-edited and contributed to The Edinburgh Companion to Scots. He directs the Scottish Corpus of Texts and Speech (SCOTS) project, and the Corpus of Modern Scottish Writing.

Christian Kay is an Honorary Professorial Research Fellow in the Department of English Language at the University of Glasgow.
